A competition held for new architects in Portugal, where a House was to be (re)imagined as the center piece for a standard middle class portuguese family.

The location, determined by each candidate, was set in an abandoned little island right off the coast of Lisbon´s river Tagus, called "Ilha do Rato", or in English "Mouse Island".

The island itself was a challenge: an abandoned and utopian setting in every way. Abandoned for several decades and put in the selling market but without any buyers available, the owner just gave up on making any profit out of it.

The idea behind this project was to built a sustainable house for a family of four, based on an agriculture settlement, trying to take advantage of the benefits of the land.

At the same time, the whole house would be built with sustainable and recycled wood. The heating system of the house was made possible through the installation of a heating boiler and the water had a filtration system that allowed their inhabitants to drink and shower with their own potable water.

The design was heavily influenced by local fishermen´s houses and huts and, also, by a series of traditional tribes living on coasts around the south hemisphere of the globe. The house was designed as a long walkway, where its residents would find, left and right, various spaces familiar to a private residence, such as the bedrooms, the kitchen or the main living room. Each individual space was communicating through the corridor and each space would be luxuriously bathe by sunlight, emerging through wide and large windows. An outside pool and a gardening  would be bathe in sunlight with the helping of wide and large windows.
